چکیده

Cryptic habitats are often overlooked in biodiversity surveys. Phytotelmata, or plant pools, one type of cryptic habitat that supports diverse fauna a miniature ecosystem. This study surveys the arthropod community two types phytotelmata, bracts and leaf rolls, on single species, Calathea capitata (Ruiz Pav.) Lindl. (Zingiberales: Marantaceae), from Amazon site Peru. Specimens were collected eight rolls. A total 55 arthropods (36 adults, 19 juveniles) found both phytotelmata types. In bract samples found: spiders (Araneae: Corinnidae), beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae, Erotylidae, Staphylindae), flies (Diptera: Limoniidae), leafhopper nymph (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae), ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), unidentified larvae. roll Leaf Chrysomelidae), an earwig (Dermaptera: Spongiforidae), Drosophilidae), adult Cicadellidae). similar survey lutea Schultes Peru revealed dominated by Coleoptera rolls Diptera bracts, with few Dermaptera Hymenoptera, but no Araneae Hemiptera. demonstrates host taxa serve as nursery to immature stages thus impacting life cycles local fauna, which turn affect biodiversity.

Phytotelmatrichis, a new genus of Acrotrichinae (Coleoptera: Ptiliidae) associated with the phytotelmata of Zingiberales plants in Peru.

Phytotelmatrichis, gen. n. a new genus of Ptiliidae: Acrotrichinae with two species Phytotelmatrichis peruviensis sp. n. and Phytotelmatrichis osopaddington sp. n. is described and illustrated. The new species were found during a survey of insects in the aquatic environments that form in the hollows (phytotelmata) in the leaves and floral bracts of Zingiberales plants. The new taxa were found i...

Antioxidant Properties of Medicinal Plants from Peru

There is a wide diversity of plants and seasonal crops in Peru, due to the presence of many climatic zones. Numerous plants are used to cure or prevent diseases. These plants are promising candidates for functional foods products. The most frequent form in which they are used is an aqueous infusion or decoction. In this study, we compared the antioxidant properties of ten Peruvian plants infusi...

Molecular phylogenetics and evolution of host plant use in the Neotropical rolled leaf 'hispine' beetle genus Cephaloleia (Chevrolat) (Chrysomelidae: Cassidinae).

Here, we report the results of a species level phylogenetic study of Cephaloleia beetles designed to clarify relationships and patterns of host plant taxon and tissue use among species. Our study is based on up to 2088bp of mtDNA sequence data. Maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood, and Bayesian methods of phylogenetic inference consistently recover a monophyletic Cephaloleia outside of a basal...

Notes on the ecology of rolled-leaf hispines (Chrysomelidae, Cassidinae) at La Gamba (Costa Rica)1

A total of 301 adult hispine beetles of the genera Cephaloleia and Chelobasis were found in rolled leaves of plants of 17 species of Zingiberales (families Costaceae, Heliconiaceae, Maranthaceae, Musaceae, and Zingiberaceae) during a field study at La Gamba, Golfito region, Costa Rica. Of these beetles, Cephaloleia belti was recorded from 12 potential host plant species, C. distincta from 7, C....
